Bedtime Stories......and memories that last.

Thanksgiving 2011 was another great trip to Long Island to see family, relax and enjoy spending time together. Among so many memories, conversations, good meals, belly laughs and blessings, we took time to go as a family to visit Cedar Hill Cemetery. While that may be a gloomy topic of conversation and may spoil the mood of all the time we spent giving thanks over the holiday, I believe that is where thanks is most deserved. Nevertheless, my motivation tonight for posting a blog entry is not to share about a cemetery visit or to reflect on our lost loved ones, but instead to comment on how the little things that often go undetected can be so meaningful. Connor, or should I say Thomas Connor Terry, is standing among many Terry's in the picture. He's still too young to really understand where his name came from, but he knows that he is standing beside his great grandfather with the same name while facing his great, great grandfather up on the hill also with the same name while his father takes his picture,...who shares the same name. And there is even more to tell, but that will wait until he ages some more. Standing there, Connor said little and ran around the place more than he participated in any discussions. It wasn't until tonight that he shared his thoughts and began talking about it during bedtime.

Jenn and her mother went out for the night. I had the kids for the night. For me, it was a long day, but spending time with Connor and Carly almost always rejuvenates me and keeps me positive. Among the chaos and bedtime routines there is almost always a moment that I am so grateful for and that makes me feel so blessed to be a father. Tonight, was no different.

I chose to tuck Carly in first and then went to Connor's room. As we settled in and I was getting him all tucked in, he surprised me with his questions. "Daddy, why do girls change their name when they get married?" "When I get married will that happen too and will the girl have the same name?" I will spare you my answers, but this sparked a deeper conversation. We talked briefly about his name, where it came from, how he is the only boy with the Terry name, and that his name is special.

Afterwards there was a brief moment of silence.

"Daddy, thank you for my name. When you die I will always keep my name and when I have a son I want him to have the same name too".

Now the brief moment of silence was for me.

I was proud. I told him I would like that and hope he has a son one day. "Daddy, I'm sorry I said you were going to die, that would be really sad wouldn't it"? I told him not to worry, I will be around a long time. I pray I do meet his son one day and have the same opportunities my grandfathers did with me to share stories and memories down to the younger generations. That will be special.

So, we talked a little more and I did not want to lose the learning moment. It just so happened that after our visit to the cemetery, I felt a strange desire to find another landmark that would be meaningful to Connor one day and so we found a sign in Terryville that was on Terryville Road. We pulled over and the Terry guys all stood by it and smiled. (This is not easy to convince my Dad AND brother AND son at the same time that this is a good idea, but it happened and worked out this time!) I reminded Connor of the picture we took and explained to him that he was named after some of the people that were responsible for Terryville. It wasn't the first time I has shared this with him, but you could almost see the light bulb turn on and the pride he felt. It was a memorable moment. One that I feel blessed to have had time to experience.

While he may soon grow to realize he was not born into wealth and amazing good fortune, or he may not be the next generation of a famous family in People Magazine, or even be among the children who have families that have accomplished incredible heroic feats, he will know that he is a Terry. That may not be meaningful to anyone but us, but I believe that giving children a sense of pride in their identity and allowing them to learn about their heritage is priceless. All too frequently I meet with students who are lost, unsure of who they are, searching for esteem, self-worth and more confidence. It is alarming. I only hope that I can foster this sense of confidence somehow in my children and I have learned tonight that it is often the little things we do that get our children thinking and asking the right questions. This time it was a visit to the cemetery and a drive around Terryville that stuck with him. The result was this picture that will last a lifetime and hopefully stir up even more questions one day:

Good night Thomas Connor Terry. You are one special kid! I love you.

HaLlOwEeN

Because Matt and I weren't too keen on the idea of trick-or-treating on a school night we came up with an alternate plan. Both C&C went for it and were pretty excited. The plan involved trunk-or-treating Friday and Saturday nights, tick-or-treating through Nonnie's community Sunday (each year, a number of residents call her specifically to ask if her grandchildren will come trick-or-treating at their houses), and then on Halloween, all dressed up, we sit on our front porch and greet other trick-or-treaters and hand out candy. I think they wore their costumes more this year than they ever have - and still made out with a bucket load of candy (for the Candy Fairy, of course). It really was a lot of fun and we have talked about doing it again, although it will all depend on what day of the week Halloween falls on.

Father Daughter Date Night

A few weeks ago, Matt and Carly attended the Father Daughter Date night sponsored by Henrico County Parks and Rec. They both dressed up and off they went for a night of dinner and dancing! Aren't they so cute!?

Lake Anna

It's been over a month and I've got some catching up to do!

At the end of September, Matt's parents rented a house on Lake Anna and invited us all to join them. The house was BEAUTIFUL and sat on a delightful piece of property right on the water. Matt and Kris rented a pontoon boat for the weekend which we thoroughly enjoyed. It even came equipped with a tube which was taken advantage of...by the brave (and hot-blooded). The water was actually about 75 degrees so (I'm assuming) it was somewhat bearable and refreshing. We enjoyed s'mores around the fire pit, fishing, fishing, and more fishing, sand play at the "beach", ping-pong, boat rides, and some precious, precious family time. Here are some of our memories of the trip.

Carly Starts Kindergarten!

Today was the day. Carly's highly anticipated first day of Kindergarten began at 6:15 this morning when Daddy woke her up (he went into work late so he could see her off to school today). After (slowly) completing her morning routine, she came downstairs to a homemade breakfast of blueberry pancakes - Daddy's specialty, a family favorite. A few pictures on the front porch and then it was off, with rain boots and umbrellas, to the bus stop. I don't think she ever stopped smiling the entire wait. As soon as the bus arrived, she got into line and boarded the bus like she'd been doing it for years. She is so grown up.Of course, big brother, was there to comfort her if she needed it. He was so sweet.

When she got off the bus this afternoon, she still wore the same smile that she had on when she got on the bus in the morning. Of course, I asked a million questions (and got maybe four or five answers) about her day. One of them...

Me: "Carly, did you meet any new friends today?"
Carly: "Um, no, I didn't really feel like it today."

OK, then. Hopefully she was at least pleasant. Here's to making some friends tomorrow!

Irene

It is so surreal that such a beautiful, warm, and sunny day can follow such a dark, rainy, windy, and DEVASTATING day. During her nearly 12 hour stay, she took two of our HUGE trees, part of a fence, our beloved swingset, and our power. She certainly overstayed her welcome and we were happy to see her go. We are so very grateful, however, that she left our house, garage, and family unharmed.

10 years of memories celebrated in the DR

July 2001 seems so long ago, yet at the same time seems only just a few short months ago. Time is a funny thing and is greatly subjective depending on so many factors. To a child a decade is an eternity, but as life progresses it somehow looses its longevity and we learn to cherish every moment. We make conscious efforts to commit moments in time to memory between life's hectic schedules and responsibilities and so we purposefully plan vacations for special occasions. Jenn is much better at this than I am and she is always stretching me to stay active and involved. I guess that makes us a good match in some ways as we balance each other out on occasion. However, this time, to celebrate 10 years of marriage, it was a mutual decision to plan a getaway. As a result, after careful consideration, much research and purposeful planning, we agreed on a few destinations. From there, it was decided that I would handle the rest. The last time I did this was ten years ago,....our honeymoon at a Sandals Resort in the Bahamas and a Caribbean Cruise. That was fun!

I was certainly out of practice planning trips and a bit overwhelmed to begin, but I found plenty of motivation when the finances were placed in my hands to make decisions. = ) Long story short, with help from a family friend and travel agent Linda B., our final destination was the Dominican Republic. Specifically, we were headed to Punta Cana to an all-inclusive resort known as Excellence. http://www.excellence-resorts.com/caribbean-and-mexico-destinations/excellence-punta-cana

Our trip began with a ride up to Long Island to drop off our luggage, I mean children, with Grandpa and Grandma Terry. We were able to get a terrific beach day in even before our trip at Wading River Beach and that was great.
Our departure was on the 31st of July from JFK at 8am. Our arrival in Punta Cana was around 12pm and it gave us most of the afternoon to enjoy at the resort. While I sat in the airport, on the plane and in the shuttle to the report thinking of all the fun to be had soon, Jenn did not know where we were going and the secret lasted right up to the last moment. She only knew for sure when we pulled up to the entrance of Excellence Resort and received a glass of champagne and a wet, cool towel. From her reaction, I think I hit another home run with my planning.
The resort held up to its name and was "Super Excellent", as they say on property there whenever asked, "Como Estas"? While there are plenty of stories to be told and details to share, our happiest memories were of sitting on the beach or poolside doing nothing but lounging in the sun and reading. Everywhere you went you could hear the ocean waves and anywhere you sat a waiter would find you to serve you your favorite drink. It was a dream! When we were not swimming or reading, we were eating delicious meals or enjoying good music and evening entertainment. This night we ate at a place called The Lobster House and both ate surf and turf poolside and oceanside. What a view!Another restaurant that had some of the best food was the French Restaurant called Chez Isabelle. One night we ate out and wore our annual anniversary outfits, which has been a tradition of ours each year. We each buy each other an outfit and wear it out to dinner. Here's this year's picks:One morning, we saw a few men clearing the grounds and gathering coconuts from the trees, which they used to make drinks in at the bars. Jenn went to see them working and one man kindly began carving the top of a coconut, handed a bite-size piece to Jenn to eat and gave her the final product of his design to consume. It was fresh coconut juice. MMMMM.
We went to the SPA and enjoyed a couples massage and facial that included hydrotherapy and other things I can't explain, but that was my first experience with any SPA treatment. Very interesting indeed.

The grounds were magnificent and worth sharing as well. Here's some pics of what we saw in our walks around the property.
We met two really nice couples that we seemed to connect with and we spent some time with them at the pool and in the evenings. One couple was from Connecticut and the other was was Toronto, Canada.
Our departure was on a day of overcast skies and rainy weather, which was Tropical Storm Emily. It was becoming a pretty dangerous storm with heavy rains, but we were able to make it out of the country with little delay and we were fortunate. The weather did make it easier to leave, but we knew we would miss the wonderful memories we made at Excellence in Punta Cana. ...................... If only time did not have to fly by and we could have made time slow down as it once did when we were young.

Happy Anniverary Honey. I am excited for the next ten years together and more trips like this to come. Until then,......

Backyard Movie Night

We, really I, have been yearning to host a backyard movie night for at least a year now. We finally set a date and we borrowed a projector. We were showing Toy Story 3. We secured a sheet to the garage to serve as a screen and hung mason jar candle holders (with citronella tea lights from Crate and Barrel) around the yard. We had popcorn and boxed candy to munch on. Other than the cRaZy hot temps, it was great!

I think we'll plan to do it again...in the Fall!

Triathlon

Our neighbor, a triathlon enthusiast, encouraged me to register Connor for a kids' triathlon her son competed in last year. She is fully aware of the large amount of energy Connor has, and his excitement for anything fast. She was sure Connor would love it and do very well. After talking it over and explaining it to Connor, he quickly expressed interest in competing, so I registered him.

Well, the event was this morning. It took place in the Settler's Landing subdivision on the southside at their Rec Center/Pool. After Packet Pick-Up last night, we went to the site and heard brief but informative rules and procedures (which was extremely important because none of us had ever competed in a triathlon), so we had a little knowledge going into this. We left the house at 6:45 this morning. After arriving, we set up Connor's gear (bike, helmet, sneakers, goggles, etc...) in the appropriate places and then waited for the show to begin! The event was divided into two age "divisions"; Ages 8 and under, and 9+. The younger competitors went first.

First was the 50 meter swim

then the 1.5 mile bike

and finally a .5 mile run He was AweSoMe!

Here he is with his medal (each participant received one)

He was finished by 8:30. The awards were not going to be given until 10:30 and, although we thought Connor did a great job, we felt fairly confident that he would not get an award - paired with the fact the Matt pushed through the pain and came with us despite just having surgery yesterday and was ready for a rest - we decided to head home. 2 hours was just too long to sit around and wait. Unfortunately the "transition area" (where the bikes, helmets, etc... are kept) was closed until the entire competition was over, which meant we couldn't leave. We decided to hop back in the car and drive around a bit (we ended up at Target).

We got back just as the awards were being presented. We sat on the sidelines and watched and cheered and were utterly stunned when Connor Terry's name was called for 1st Place for the 7-8 year olds. Yep..our boy rocked and it wasn't just us that thought so! He came home with a trophy. I think the grin on my face was bigger than Connor's. I am one PROUD momma!
